DIY // Autumn Leaves Garland Craft
Happy Autumn, everyone. We are kicking off fall with this fun fall garland. I first saw this method of melting crayons in between wax paper in Martha Stewart Living a long time ago. I decided to apply this technique to make a cool garland. I'm excited because the options are limitless with this craft. So, there you have it, I hope you try this DIY. Be creative and have fun.
The Goods:
- Several old crayons with the paper peeled off. We used shades of orange, red, yellow, green, etc... ( fall colors)
- Pencil sharpener
- Wax paper
- Iron and ironing board
- Scissors
- String ( we used red baker's twine)
- Decorative tape
Directions:
- Lay out a sheet of wax paper and use the pencil sharpener to shave the crayons onto the paper. Vary the placement of each color as well as varying the color of the crayon. It should be a tasteful mix of seasonal colors, much like fall itself.
- Lay another sheet of wax paper on top of the shavings and place on an ironing board. With the iron set on a low setting, gently iron the paper and melt the crayon shavings. Don't leave the iron on any one spot for too long. It should melt rather quickly.
- Allow the papers to cool and then cut leaf shapes out of it. I did it free hand but you could easily draw the leaves out first.
- Once the leaves are cut, pull out as much string as you want. We made a garland that was about 5' long and ended up using about 3 total wax-crayon sheets. So, as for quantity, it depends on how much garland you want to make.
- Lay out your string and begin to tape the leaves on with the decorative tape (you know how we love that stuff here at Goldmine). Be random with the leaf placement. Try not to make too much of a pattern with them. We like the look of the tape but if don't, you could easily thread the leaves on with a needle. Much like we did with the driftwood feather mobile.
- Hang your garland somewhere in any way that you like. Enjoy!
